When the captain in the 1967 classic film Cool Hand Luke with George Kennedy and Paul Newman, said “What we have here is a failure to communicate….” everyone knew what he meant. It became an idiom. People knew that, even in much less difficult circumstances than in the film, in their own business & family relationships, there are not infrequent failures to communicate!
While for lots of reasons people have different style and skills in listening and speaking, these are skills that can be learned and developed. When developed early in life, it’s certainly easier to refine over time. If not developed early, these skills can still be learned and developed which can enrich life in personally and professionally. Without these, “failure to communicate” could lead to a much more stressful and difficult life.
Since 1980, my counseling, coaching and consulting work with clients, business and personal, is to address this failure and to help people become aware of behavior, language, reactivity, attitude, intent and the larger context in which these occur, pointing toward their business or personal goals and purpose. At times, this leads to apology, for others, to forgive and for all to move on to life’s next chapters. There’s a process to release and let go that which no longer serves. Everyone falls. Everyone deeply wants to evolve–it is the chrysalis to the caterpillar. My consultations with CEO’s as well as with business partners or couples address many of the very same themes & challenges opening the doors to greater success, fulfillment and well-being
Learning communication skills is a life-raft that not only keeps us afloat but can help us jettison us forward. In business, at home, on stage, on the court, communication, verbal and non-verbal are indispensable tools. Communication is the key to understanding and empathy. It is also the key to the most successful of negotiations.
At core is that good communication is the cornerstone of leadership. Whether this is in a corporation, small business, a school, government, institution or family, embodying the qualities of leadership is what models change and the formation of a new paradigm for health, wellness, balanced priorities and values, integrity and well-being. Learning the qualities of having a coherent mind, open heart and ability to communicate from these is the basis of authentic leadership in any context.
After empowering yourself, helping others with same around communication, in the workplace or in the couple or family and becoming more masterful with one’s mind is you creating a congruent, more harmonious environment. If you master your mind, you master your life. Relaxation, brain and heart coherence, applying ancient wisdom and modern ncuro-science to future activity, allows us to listen, learn and evolve, growing more into our vastly creative, human intelligence and potential. This makes for an incredibly exciting and enriching life.
Creating states of mind which are more receptive and creative advances and expands our life’s possibilities. If having fun and finding humor aren’t happening naturally, these too can and should be developed, which typically happens also part of my creative consultations.
A lot of communication involves understanding when things are going terribly and as best possible, why, so we can get to cause. How we show up under stress, how we negotiate resolution to conflict, how we mediate, breaking through from breakdown which happens in life routinely, is a big part of the work I do.
I ask the questions, why do I do what I do? What is our human potential and how can we make it greater? How do we further expand our creativity, our neural network, tune into our heart’s intelligence and take the next step?
